RIGOLETTO - Verdi

A story of passion and death from the mind of Victor Hugo, author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Quebec stage director François Racine offers up his version of one of Verdi’s popular masterpieces, a true collection of hits.

Rigoletto, court jester to the corrupt Duke of Mantua, has been concealing his daughter Gilda from the public. But the young woman soon falls under the Duke’s spell and is abducted. The jester calls upon a hired assassin to fulfil a need for vengeance that will come back to curse him.

ROBERT DEVEREUX - Donizetti

For the first time in Quebec, a little known opera by the composer of Lucia di Lammermoor. Elizabeth I, the legendary queen who was the inspiration for several films, is at the centre of this romanticized take on the history of England. A chance to discover Greek diva Dimitra Theodossiou, herself a queen of the bel canto, who triumphs on stages across Europe.

Robert Devereux—Queen Elizabeth’s favourite—has betrayed his country. The Queen would perhaps be willing to forgive his treachery to the throne if he had not committed a far worse offence: betraying the Queen’s love and taking up with young Sarah. Torn between personal passion and matters of state, Elizabeth must choose: a pardon or the scaffold.

Sung in Italian with English and French surtitles

November 13,17, 20, 22 & 25, 2010 at 8 p.m.

WERTHER - Massenet

A romantic drama par excellence, based on a story written by one of the fathers of Romanticism, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. An opportunity to re-discover Massenet’s masterpiece in its rare version for baritone. In the lead roles, Phillip Addis and Michèle Losier, two rising stars who are already making a name for themselves on American and European stages.

Werther, a young poet, is in love with Charlotte. However, to fulfil her mother’s dying wish, Charlotte must marry Albert. In despair, Werther at first runs off. But upon his return, he finds that this impossible love must end in death.

Sung in French with English and French surtitles

The Montreal return of Nicola Beller Carbone, our dazzling Tosca in the 2009-2010 season. All the enthusiastic energy of international star Yannick Nézet-Séguin, leading a raging orchestra to the rhythm of morbid passions in this violent drama that mixes together religion and lust, desire and death…

Everyone desires the beautiful princess Salome, including her stepfather Herod. But Salome is fatally attracted to the prophet Jokanaan, Herod’s prisoner. When Jokanaan rejects her advances, Salome dances for her stepfather and finally wins the prophet’s head...

LA BOHÈME - Puccini

Puccini’s masterpiece skilfully delivers equal measures of tears and smiles, melodies that create a sense of intimacy, and moments of intense passion. A story of love and friendship, with an all-Canadian cast of young singers of the same age as the characters they are portraying! The return of the team that brought us Pagliacci/Schicchi, the critical success of the 2009-2010 season: stage director Alain Gauthier, set designer Olivier Landreville, and familiar faces in the cast.

In Paris, in the garret he shares with other artist friends, Rodolfo the poet falls head over heels for Mimi, a young seamstress. But it’s winter: cold and poverty complicate the couple’s love. A mortal illness rears its head and threatens Mimi…
